The collective is an urban regeneration project located at an infill lot bordering Alexandra Park, Trinity Bellwoods and Kensington. Its aims are to produce collaborative spaces in the Alexandra Park neighbourhood that can generate a sense of community, pique the interest of the public realm and provide all neighbourhood residents with opportunity for advancement, employment and convenience through multi-level income housing. An integration of opportunistic, inclusive and adaptable agencies that offer rehabilitation and advancement are catalysts in the urban renewal. By activating vacant lots with such processes, interest is generated amongst residents and the public realm, encouraging economic activity and increased resident wellbeing.
By preserving the bulk of the existing front facade, The Collective blends uninterruptedly within the streetscape while the carved out entry into the courtyard seamlessly integrates and invites the public realm into the structure. A partial mesh wall covers a portion of the facade to provide privacy for residents while allowing sunlight to penetrate through the crevices. The enveloped courtyard invites community congregation while providing the public access to event spaces, retail and leisurely activity while a rooftop terrace allows the community and residents additional employment opportunity and a space to gather and congregate in a semi-private manner.
